Mississippi is a beautiful state. From the Delta, to the
piney woods, to the Gulf of Mexico, the state offers a wide
variety of activities! For outdoorsmen, fishing, hunting,
water skiing, jet skiing, golf and tennis are all year!
CAPITAL CITY - JACKSON
For many years, the capital of Mississippi was Natchez.
In 1821 two state commissioners were sent to find a central
located city that could serve the entire state as the capital
city. They came to a spot known as LeFleur's Bluff, a small
trading post on the west bank of the Pearl River. With its
beautiful surroundings, abundant timber, navigable waters
and nearness to the Natchez Trace this seemed to be the
perfect choice. As a result of finding this ideal location,
Jackson, Mississippi was born and named after Andrew
Jackson.
THE MISSISSIPPI GULF COAST
The Playground of the South
The Mississippi Gulf Coast hugs the Gulf of Mexico,
approximately an hour's drive from New Orleans to the
west and Mobile, AL to the east and includes the cities
of Gulfport, Biloxi, Pass Christian, Long Beach and
D'lberville!
One of the most famous icons of the Coast, the Biloxi
Lighthouse is the only lighthouse in the middle of a
four lane highway! Located on Highway 90 (Beach Blvd)
at the foot of Porter Avenue, the Biloxi Lighthouse has
been a symbol of Biloxi's maritime history since it was
erected in 1848.
CASINOS
Mississippi Beach-once hidden treasure-now offers greater
riches than its tropical climate and 26 mile-long beach:
it has casino gaming! Since August, 1992, casinos have become
a major addition to the area's vibrant tourism industry.
For a state rich in tradition and history, opening its doors
to this new attraction has created even more excitement for
visitors from all over the nation and the world.
Tourists can now enjoy casinos offering gaming comparable to
Las Vegas and Atlantic City-including "comps," the industry's
word for complimentaries such as meals, hotel accommodations,
beverages and limo service. The Gulf Coast casinos also offer
high limits and liberal rules, like many counterparts in other
areas of the country, but with the unmistakable Southern charm
that is sure to please even the most serious players.
